Tech Stack

Mongo DB Google BigQuery Redshift EC2 Jenkins PHP HTML Our front-end development stack has evolved to encompass a variety of different frameworks, libraries, and tools. ReactJS is the core library and along with the many additional libraries and tools which are part of its eco-system we have been able to grow this into a great development toolkit. This toolkit helps us organize and re-use our code, provides us a set of common tools for prototyping, testing and sharing components, and helps us have more fun while developing. We considered using Zurb's Foundations for Emails framework. In the end, however, we decided to move off of that framework and onto our own in-house development stack. We had two main drivers in this decision: The resulting HTML was getting bloated. As we added more layout detail into the emails we found we were nesting more and more tables which led to more and more HTML. Gmail automatically clips all emails at about 100kb, and an important side-effect of that was that our email provider’s tracking pixel would get clipped and we would not always know if emails were opened. We wanted to leverage our existing React toolset. This includes some of our own simple HTML components, css-modules with colors and other brand variables, as well as being able to use storybook to view the rendered HTML. Storybook is a great tool which is quickly becoming our favorite framework for collaborating on our UI component development. We are mostly a React shop. There’s been a great deal of interesting development on using react-on-the-server and this is out-of-the-box supported just by using the ReactDOMServer.renderToStaticMarkup method to take a React component and render it into static HTML. Starting with a simple expressJS server we were able to build out a service to render our emails. The service accepts POST requests with a template-name and a json-encoded data blob and returns a fully rendered HTML document suitable for email as either a plain HTML file or a JSON-encoded response. In the JSON-response this would also include a text-representation of that same HTML file. All minified, inlined, de-classified and ready to ship to an email client. As an added bonus we were able to pull in our css-modules so we could re-use our brand color palette and many of our simpler React components. Finally we could create our own re-usable html-email specific components mostly for simple Row, Column and other types of buttons and containers, and quickly collaborate on these and test them out with different props by leveraging storybook. Our final stack was shaping up to be a lot more fun to work with than what we’d had before so we decided we needed a catchy name for it. We call it mailboat. On the data science side, we used Pinterest’s open-source Kafka log persistence service Secor and Facebook’s SQL query engine Presto, and we built a data pipeline that ingests 40k messages per second with a SQL interface for interactive querying, all on top of our recently-adopted Mesos/Aurora architecture. This work will serve as the data source for several of our products whose upstream data flows from S3, positioning us to leverage more cost-effective database technologies. Along the way, we gleaned some important life lessons that should be relatable to those who’ve had the pleasure of somberly contemplating their past architectural decisions.
