Our Mission

Building an open source, secure & private messenger, crypto wallet, and web3 browser. Status strives to be a secure communication tool that upholds human rights. We enable community money, community law and through privacy, preserve culture. Status is a multi-purpose communication tool that combines a peer-to-peer messenger, decentralized crypto-wallet, and Web3 browser. We are a team distributed across the world working remotely from all corners of the world. We work in Swarms which are small teams of 2-5 people with a very specific goal. Swarms follow a structured approach for feature and product development. Status is not a traditional organization. We don’t have hierarchy, there are no offices and no managers. We’re all here to achieve our mission, and we have the freedom to choose how we do it.

Tech Stack

Our code lives in two main repos: status-react and status-go. Javascript React.js Clojure Golang We are building the tools and infrastructure for the advancement of a secure, private, and open web3. As a product, Status is an open source, Ethereum-based app that gives users the power to chat, transact, and access a revolutionary world of DApps on the decentralised web. With the high level goals of preserving the right to privacy, mitigating the risk of censorship, and promoting economic trade in a transparent, open manner, Status is building a community where anyone is welcome to join and contribute. As an organization, Status seeks to push the web3 ecosystem forward through research, creation of developer tools, and support of the open source community.

Core Values

As an organization we have a set of principles that informs how, why and what we're building. The tools we are building, the protocols we use, the design decisions we make, must ensure no content is under surveillance. Too long have we been forced to use tools that are easily monitored by third parties. These principles act as tools. Tools for thinking, for communication, and for decentralized decision making. They keep us honest about where we are failing short of our vision. Liberty We believe in the sovereignty of individuals. As a platform that stands for the cause of personal liberty, we aim to maximize social, political, and economic freedoms. This includes being coercion-resistant. Censorship Resistance We enable free flow of information. No content is under surveillance. We abide by the cryptoeconomic design principle of censorship resistance. Even stronger, Status is an agnostic platform for information. Security We don't compromise on security when building features. We use state-of-the-art technologies, and research new security methods and technologies to make strong security guarantees. Privacy Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world. For us, it's essential to protect privacy in both communications and transactions, as well as being a pseudo-anonymous platform. Additionally, we strive to provide the right of total anonymity. Transparency We strive for complete openness and symmetry of information within the organization, and have no border between our core contributors and our community. We are frank about our shortcomings, especially when making short-term tradeoffs in service of our long-term goals. Openness The software we create is a public good. It is made available via a free and open source license, for anyone to share, modify and benefit from. We believe in permission-less participation. Decentralization We minimize centralization across both the software and the organization itself. In other words, we maximize the number of physical computers composing the network, and maximize the number of individuals who have control over the system(s) we are building. Inclusivity We believe in fair and widespread access to our software, with an emphasis on ease-of-use. This also extends to social inclusivity, permissionless participation, interoperability, and investing in educational efforts. Continuance We create software incentivized to continue to exist and improve, without the stewardship of a single entity or any of the current team members. Resourcefulness We are relentlessly resourceful. As we grow and have ready access to capital, it is our obligation to token holders to fight bureaucracy and inefficiencies within the organization. This means solving problems in the most effective way possible at lower economic costs (in terms of capital, time and resources).

Vacation & Benefits

Compensation We ask that you’re willing to be paid in a combination of fiat and cryptocurrency. We’ll reward you with a competitive base salary. We’ll also reward you with SNT (Status Network Tokens) to give you a real stake in the success of the organization. A generous budget to choose whatever phone and laptop you prefer. We provide a small allowance for a co-working space. Freedom Work from wherever you choose. Our contributors are a varied bunch - some work from home, some from a coworking space, some from a local cafe, others are nomads. We operate an open vacation policy, meaning there are no hard limits or strict rules around how much holiday you take and how you schedule it. We want our contributors to be healthy and take the time they need to relax and enjoy quality disconnected time away from work. Travel Each contributor has a budget to attend conferences and meetups of their choice. 1-2 times per year the whole organisation gets together to connect (in 2018, we visited Bangkok and Prague). Note: We don’t offer traditional benefits like medical/dental insurance - we’d rather pay you well and give you the freedom to select your own benefits, on your terms.
